Evangelist Billy Graham’s wife, Ruth Bell Graham, had inscribed on her tombstone “End of construction. Thank you for your patience.” It helped symbolize the truth that God’s work in us is not complete until Christ’s return, or until we meet Him in heaven. Our school year theme is “God at Work” from Philippians 1:6, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

When we accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, we begin the lifelong process of spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit works in us to renew our thinking, remove our selfishness, and develop qualities in us that are more and more Christ-like. We all know the frustration of construction and roadwork as we travel. We must be patient in that process just as God is patient with His own construction project, us. This school year as we travel along the road of life together, I pray that each of us will examine our heart and cooperate with God’s construction in our life.
